Ritzville

Police have turned into dogcatchers, warning several owners of unlicensed dogs over the past few weeks that new dog licenses were required by Jan. 31. Violators face fines of up to $25, plus the normal license fee.

Ferry County

A gymnastics clinic for kindergartners through sixth-graders wishing to learn from former competitive gymnast Melody Swanson will be held at 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The $20 cost includes snacks and a T-shirt. To sign up, call (509) 775-1034.

Ephrata

The town has high hopes it will be chosen to play host to the World Soaring Championships in 2005, but recently learned the National Soaring Foundation in Hobbs, N.M., has also entered the running. The Seattle Glider Council submitted Ephrata as its favored site. A decision is pending.

Davenport

The Davenport Community Youth kickoff party is tonight at the high school auditorium. Organized by local churches, DCY is a Christcentered youth group open to all teens looking for fun and friendship in a positive environment. Festivities starting at 7 p.m. include music by the Spokane band Fishers of Men, singer Chris George and performances by a Seattle-area drama group.

Voters favored John McCain in the recent presidential primary. The Arizona Republican senator garnered 811 votes to George W. Bush’s 719. Among the 3,434 people who voted - 49.75 percent of registered voters - the GOP split with “unaffiliated,” and voters declaring Democratic Party affiliation were a distant third. Lyndon LaRouche received seven votes.

Lynn Mandyke, director of the Corbin Art Center, was recently named the employee of the winter quarter for the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department. Mandyke has led efforts to restore two historic gardens in Pioneer Park, where the art center is located.

Stevens County

The Stevens County Historical Society needs volunteers to serve as board members and to help order and stock the museum gift shop. Also needed are tour hosts and greeters for the Keller Heritage Center and Museum. To help, call (509) 684-5968.

Using a special legislative appropriation, Whitman County, Asotin County, Latah County and the cities of Lewiston and Moscow are studying forming a single regional 911 system to combine emergency dispatch operations. The study is expected to be completed by the end of August. The search for a study consultant begins next week at a conference at the Whitman County Courthouse.

Delegates for the 2000 State Democratic Convention were selected recently at the county caucus. The delegate for Bill Bradley is June Judd; Bill Rember is he alternate. Delegates for Al Gore are Kristin Adams, Deanne Hawks and Delores Fields. Alternates are Billie Machado, Dorothy Blankenship and Inez Alcorn.

A Zone 5 Lake Pend Oreille School District board trustee election will be May 16. Anyone interested in running for trustee should contact the board clerk at (208) 263-5053, Ext. 215, by 5 p.m. April 14. Zone 5 is the downtown Sandpoint area.

Winners in the home-school short story writing contest were chosen recently and received gifts from Boundary Trading Co., The Creamery, The Gift House and R Place. First place winner in the 10-and-younger category is Michelle Tanner. Andrakay Hoisington placed second. First place winner in the 11-and-older category is Brittany McLeish, with second place going to Arlington Albertson.

The American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” benefit will be July 14-15 at Coeur d’Alene High School. The overnight event honors cancer survivors and remembers its victims. Lakes Middle School and the Silver Lake Mall will collect pennies form 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the mall. Ray’s R.V. will donate $100 for any R.V. sold during its weekend mall show.

The Palouse Regional Crisis Line will hold a training session Saturday. The line is a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers who provide support and crisis intervention to people in need. Mark Jones raced his red Ford Thunderbird to first place in the Northwest Late Model 4’s class during the Apple Cup stock car race held recently at Yakima. Jones builds and maintains his car but is looking for a corporate sponsor. He will race race in the Tri-Cities, Kalispell, Wenatchee, Mission Valley and Yakima this season.

Troy School District is considering asking voters for a levy this year. The district says its ability to balance its budget without an increase is slim due to the loss of 12 students. Voter permission for an increase is required by Montana law.
