Guarding The Pope
Amid the pageantry of the papal Mass at Korazim were some very obvious security measures, as Israeli police and army deployed in an operation of unprecedented scale.
The pope delivered his sermon from behind a bulletproof glass shield. Bomb squad units fanned out around the site and police carrying machine guns ringed the perimeter.
Some Vatican officials have privately criticized the show of force as excessive. When the pope travels Sunday to Nazareth and Monday to Jerusalem’s Old City, both flashpoints of conflict, security is expected to grow even tighter.
