Head Start Program Taking Applications

Lakeland schools

Lakeland Head Start Center is accepting applications for the fall program. The center provides services to limited income families who reside within the Lakeland School district.

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program for families with children between ages 3 and 5 years old. The program provides healthy meals and snacks, free medical and dental care, and a variety of educational opportunities.

To register for next year, contact the center located in Athol at 683-9317.

In other school district news

In an attempt to balance elementary enrollments for the 2000-2001 school year the Lakeland School Board entertained discussion for boundary adjustments as follows: Athol elementary students in the Chilco Estates area would attend Garwood; Spirit Lake elementary students in the Upper Twin Lakes Road area would attend Garwood; and John Brown Elementary students from Sturgeon Road, north, also would attend Garwood.

No formal action was taken but is expected to be adopted at the April 10 regular board meeting, which will be held at Athol Elementary at 7 p.m. Patrons may contact the district office with ideas and/or concerns at 687-0431.

Once again, seventh-graders from Lakeland Junior High are selling Hawaiian orchids. They spent a weekend at Silver Lake Mall offering their Best Low-cost Orchids of Our Millennium (BLOOM). The flowers, grown on a family farm on the island of Hawaii, are high-quality potted blooming orchids.

Profits will be invested in classroom technology to enhance learning and marketing skills. A wide-carriage color printer for producing posters and banner ads is the top objective, along with other color graphic projects.

The Lakeland School District is part of the Statewide “Celebrate Graduation 2000” and “Buckle Up” programs sponsored by a $60,000 grant from the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety.

The programs, administered by the state Department of Education, is held in conjunction with the all-night, alcohol-free, graduation night celebration. Nearly all Idaho schools sponsor the safe-style party for students to celebrate graduation.

Athol Elementary Principal Connie McGee said the school is still collecting several recyclable materials, as well as Campbell’s Soup labels and General Mills box tops (which can be turned in to the school office). Newspapers and aluminum cans can be dropped in the recycle bins.

Athol School cookbooks still are available for $2 at the office. The Athol Booster Club and students are holding a fund-raiser, selling candy and VIP cards, from now through April 10.

VIP cards entitle the bearer to a free, three-topping pizza at Athol’s KKJ’s Pizzeria when you purchase one of equal or greater value. The cards sell for $10 each and are good for 10 pizzas, with 50 percent of proceeds donated to the student fund.

Several Lakeland High School students made presentations at the Board of Trustee’s regular monthly meeting on March 13. The a cappella choir, lead by student director/member Anna Crecelius, sang the National Anthem to open the meeting.

Student Body President Amber Russell presented a report to the board for the Student Leadership group. Beau Brawnsherger, a computer science student, took the board on a trip to the Caribbean, with a deluxe Power Point computer presentation.

Other school board news included a recommendation for textbook adoption for classes in handwriting, health and science. The proposed curriculum materials are on display and open for public review at the district office.

The board will accept bids for furniture and equipment for the new classroom additions to Athol, Garwood and Timberlake. Bids will be opened April 5 at 1 p.m. at the district office.

Spring break is scheduled from Friday through April 9. A teacher curriculum day is added into the extended break time. End of the third quarter is Thursday.
