Ccs Runner Sets Two Meet Records

Jenni Saling of Community Colleges of Spokane set two meet records Saturday during the American Community Colleges Elite All-American Invitational, track and field meet held at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego.

Saling finished the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 13.84 seconds and the 1,500 in 4:37.02. She shattered the 800 record by more than 3 seconds.

Karie Pruett of CCS won the women’s javelin with a throw of 138 feet, 8 inches.

For the CCS men, Seth Morris placed third in the 200 in 21.84 and Todd Fayant was third in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:38.04.

At Stanford, Calif., former Washington State distance ace Bernard Lagat shattered his Cobb Track & Angell Field record in the 5,000 meters in a time of 13:35.10, easily breaking his Stanford course record of 13:36.12 set last year at the Cardinal Invitational.

In the collegiate portion of the meet, WSU senior Molly Monroe finished third in the javelin with a throw of 150 feet, 4 inches. Jeannette Martus was second in the pole vault after clearing 12-5-1/2, and Becky Potter finished third in the shot put with a throw of 46-8-3/4.

Ian Waltz threw the shot put 60-10-3/4 for third place in the men’s event.

Junior Arend Watkins ran a 13.73 in the 110-meter prelims, just .01 seconds off the NCAA automatic qualifying time. The track finals will be held today.

Baseball

Beau Craig went 3 for 4, with three RBIs and two runs, and 20th-ranked Southern California (18-9, 2-0) stormed past Washington State 12-7 in the Pacific-10 Conference.

Craig had a two-run triple to center during a six-run fourth. Justin Gemoll and Josh Persell followed with back-to-back homers, pushing USC’s lead to 12-1.

Rik Currier (6-2) allowed three runs and seven hits in 7-2/3 innings. Cougars starter Tyson Thompson allowed six hits and five runs in 2-2/3 innings. No WSU starter has earned a win since Feb. 13.

Junior Rob Henkel (4-1) struck out 18 and catcher Forrest Johnson homered to lead off the ninth, giving UCLA (15-10, 1-0) a 2-1 win over visiting Washington (7-12, 0-1).

The Huskies scored in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman Justin Drake (Ferris).

Freshman Eric Rodland hit his first career home run, a three-run blast to cap a six-run fourth, and Gonzaga (12-11, 5-4) notched an 11-5 West Coast Conference win at San Francisco (16-11, 3-5).

Gonzaga senior Jason Bay went 3 for 3, including a leadoff homer in the fifth. Bay’s fifth homer of the season gave him 25 for his career, eighth all-time in GU history.

Senior Steve Bennett (4-2) pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter, striking out three and allowing three earned runs.

A two-out single in the 10th completed Whitman’s 1-0, 15-14 sweep of visiting Whitworth (6-12, 1-4) in a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Walla Walla.

The Missionaries (7-8 overall) won the opener with a one-out, RBI single in the seventh. Pirates loser Matt Squires allowed just four hits and struck out five.

Pirates Jason Roorda, Nick Schuerman and Bryan Schutz had three RBIs apiece in the second game.

Chemeketa defeated CCS 10-7 to become the only 2-0 team at the six-team Spokane Athletic Invitational at Spokane Falls CC.

CCS, 0-2 at the tourney, led 6-5 when Chemeketa scored five in the eighth.

In other games, Edmonds defeated Walla Walla 14-1 and Lane edged Green River 4-3. All four teams are 1-1 heading into today’s final games.

James Dayley pitched a three-hit shutout in the second game, and Utah Valley State swept North Idaho 5-3, 5-0 in a SWAC doubleheader at Orem, Utah.

Crew

WSU’s varsity 8 upset Victoria and Oregon State in the featured race of a women’s competition at Wawawai Landing. The Cougars completed the 2,000-meter course in a season-best 6:43.5. WSU won three of five races.

Gonzaga and Western Washington split seven races during a men’s and women’s regatta at Long Lake.

GU won the women’s varsity 8, women’s JV 8 and men’s novice 8. WWU won three races and finished in a dead heat with the Zags in the women’s novice 8 `A’.

Softball

North Idaho went 3-0 at the NWAACC preseason tournament in Richland. The Cardinals defeated Green River 5-0, Olympic 1-0 and Grays Harbor 16-2.
