Libraries Schedule Japanese Programs
In celebration of National Library Week, the Spokane Public Library will host Japanese storytelling programs at three branches in April. Patrice Pendell of the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute will tell traditional tales from Japan with kamishibai story cards.
Each kamishibai card consists of stiff paper decorated with vivid illustrations. In Japanese, “kami” means paper and “shibai” means drama. Stories are printed on the back of the cards, which are placed inside a small stage and withdrawn as the storyteller acts out the storyline.
The Japanese tales will be told Monday from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the Indian Trail Library; Tuesday from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the East Side Library; and April 11 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at the South Hill Library.
