WSU Sanctions Sigma Nu Frat
The Washington State University Conduct Board will impose sanctions on the Sigma Nu fraternity and one of its members for violations of the student conduct code.
The board decided to impose sanctions after a conduct hearing on March 28. Formal findings are expected to be released within 10 days.
One man was cited for having recklessly endangered another member by binding him with duct tape. The person was found by firefighters responding to an unrelated fire that same night.
Federal law prevents the university from naming the student who will be disciplined, WSU spokesman Hugh Imhof said. The student will be required to write a significant paper on the topic of reckless endangerment, Imhof said, and has been put on disciplinary probation.
The fraternity chapter was not held responsible for the duct-taping incident. However, in a separate finding, the fraternity was found to have recklessly endangered some freshmen members during a Feb. 2 incident when fraternity members dropped the freshmen off in a remote field and left them there.
The fraternity will be subject to a number of disciplinary sanctions, including but not limited to significant community service, the addition of a live-in adviser and participation in fire/life safety education classes.
The fraternity also will be required to organize and sponsor an event for the larger Greek population to address values, safety or another related topic.
