Shadow Adds Five Players From Gsl Group Part Of 12 New Players On Roster; Rose Leads List Of 13 Veterans Returning

Twelve new players have joined the Spokane Shadow soccer team for the 2000 season.

The team released its roster Monday.

This year, five roster spots are reserved for under-19 developmental players, up from three in 1999. The U-19 players all come from Greater Spokane League high schools.

They are Filoman Afenegus and Dustin Allbery of North Central, Elliot Fauske of Mead, Evan Cummings of Ferris and Pete Peterson of Central Valley. The league is moving toward becoming U-23.

Forward Jeff Rose, out of Central Valley and Whitworth College, returns for his fifth season with the team after playing some key minutes during the United Soccer League’s Premier League national championship last summer at Albi Stadium. He was named to the all-tournament team.

Also back is Zane Higgins, a fourth-year player, who coaches the boys and girls teams at his alma mater, Medical Lake High School.

Higgins, another all-tournament choice last year, leads the team in career assists with 26 and points with 76. By season’s end, he could become the team’s career scoring leader. Higgins has 25 goals in 65 matches and needs five to break Dave Berto’s mark of 30.

North Central graduate Tim Seely is another on the team for the fourth straight year.

Six current Gonzaga University players are on the roster, including fourth-year Shadow player Abbas Faridnia, out of Ferris. Midfielder Alika Cosner is in his third Shadow season and defender Justin Franson is on the team for the second year.

Mead graduate Troy Ready, who plays for the University of Washington, begins his second season with the Shadow.

Brian Mullen returns at goalie. He was 18-7 in ‘99 with a 1.43 goals-against average.

The Shadow opens the season against the Cascade Surge at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Salem, Ore., in the first of four U.S. Open Cup qualifying matches. The team’s first home match at Albi Stadium is May 13 against the Premier League’s Northwest Division champion Willamette Valley Firebirds. The Shadow defeated Willamette in the national semifinals last year.
