Decathlon Mark Falls In Cc Meet
David Lemen of Clackamas Community College shattered the men’s collegiate decathlon record for two-year schools and ran away from the competition at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Multi-event Championship at Spokane Falls Community College on Tuesday.
Lemen won four of five second-day events and finished with 7,532 points. Kevin Howard of Blinn (Texas) set the mark (7,419) in 1991.
Lemen won the 100-meter dash in 11.46 seconds, jumped 23 feet, 10 inches to win the long jump, took first in the shot put with a mark of 40-4-3/4 and won the high jump by clearing 6-6-1/4. He finished second in the 400 with a time of 50.95. Community Colleges of Spokane’s Ed Swartz won the 400 in 49.84.
Ryan Berry of CCS was the top local finisher. Berry placed seventh with 5,544 points.
Amy Hill of Lane CC won the women’s pentathlon with 4,442 points. Amber Miller of CCS finished third at 4,107.
Softball
Community Colleges of Spokane fired a pair of shutouts at Blue Mountain CC to earn a doubleheader sweep in NWAACC action at Spokane Falls Community College.
Kris Rozett’s two-out, two-run single capped a four-run outburst in the third inning as the Sasquatch cruised to a 7-0 win in the opener. Kylee Curry pitched a complete-game four-hitter.
In the second game, Nicki Meyer doubled in a run in the first inning and Jenny Lytle added a two-out, two-run single in the second to lead CCS (25-3) to a 3-0 victory. Rebecca Triplett tossed a complete-game four-hitter.
Top-ranked Washington (52-5) belted four home runs, including a grand slam by Erin Helgeland, in a 7-0, 10-2 non-conference doubleheader sweep over visiting Portland State.
Golf
Cal State Northridge holds a three-stroke lead over Sacramento State after the second day of the Big Sky men’s championship in Oxnard, Calif.
CSN has a 2-over-par 578 team total.
Eastern Washington is in sixth place, 27 strokes off the pace. The Eagles’ Trevor Fox and Kyle Kelly are tied for 20th with 151 two-day totals.
Community Colleges of Spokane edged Columbia Basin 495-496 to win the Columbia Basin College Invitational women’s tournament in Pasco.
CBC’s Robyn Dodge took medalist honors with a two-day total of 155 on the par-72 Sun Willows Golf Course.
CCS’s Chana Bonnett placed second (157) while teammate Shannon Thomas was fourth (165).
CCS has won all four tournaments its entered this season.
Columbia Basin easily outdistanced runner-up CCS 593-610 in the men’s portion of the tourney.
CBC’s Pat Howard had a two-day total of 146 for medalist honors. Ben McLuen of CCS shot 149 to tie for fourth.
Gary Lindeblad of Indian Canyon shot a final-round 76 and finished tied for 13th place with a 219 total at the 20th annual Sentry Markets/Al Giusti Memorial Tournament at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash. Lindeblad pocketed $1,031.25.
Mark Wurtz of LaQuinta, Calif., won with a three-day total of 6-under-par 210. Scott Williams of Glendale Country Club was runner-up, one shot back.
The Creek at Qualchan’s Mark Gardner tied for 21st with a 221 total and earned $675. Steve Prugh of Manito tied for 41st and earned $250, while Deer Park’s Craig Schuh tied for 45th and earned $250.
Former Spokane golfer Chris Mitchell finished tied for 11th with a three-day total of 218.
Lindeblad took home an additional $816.67 after teaming with George Garber for a sixth-place finish in the pro-am portion of the tourney.
Track and field
Eastern Washington University standouts Ryan Cole and Julie Nielson were named Big Sky Conference field athletes of the week.
Cole won the javelin at the Cougar Invitational with a season-best throw of 225 feet, 2 inches and followed that by winning the javelin at the Whitworth Open with a toss of 207-3.
Nielson broke her own school record in the hammer with a throw of 179-9 to place second at the Cougar Invitational. The throw places her fifth on the conference’s all-time list in the event.
