Ferris Closes In On Baseball Lead

Greater Spokane League batting leader Eric Everson and runs-batted-in leader Adam Oakley pushed Ferris closer to the league baseball lead Tuesday.

Everson had two-run singles in the sixth and seventh innings, and Oakley blasted a three-run homer in the seventh as Ferris rallied for a 19-12 win at East Valley.

Ferris (11-3, .786) closed within percentage points of first-place North Central (10-2, .833), which didn’t play Tuesday because of wet grounds. NC rescheduled its game with third-place Central Valley (9-4) for 3:45 p.m. today. NC is also set to play at Ferris on Thursday.

When the week began, Everson had a .571 batting average and Oakley had 20 RBIs.

EV (6-7) carried an 11-7 lead into the sixth, thanks in large part to Shae Lanphere’s three-run homer in the third. EV dropped from fifth place to seventh. The top six teams qualify for the district tournament.

Also in the league, Shamus O’Doherty pitched a four-hitter and Gonzaga Prep (2-12) drew 10 walks during a 7-2 win over University (3-10) at Avista Stadium. G-Prep had just two hits during its five-run fifth. Ryan Thacker and Joe Toney were both 2 for 4 for G-Prep… . Two other GSL games - Shadle Park at Mt. Spokane and Mead at Rogers - were postponed and rescheduled for 3:45 p.m. today.

Chad McCall coaxed a fly to center with a runner on third in the seventh, and Clarkston (6-6) held on for a 5-4 win at Cheney (6-7) in the Border League. Cheney’s Seth Laughlin had a two-out, two-run single in the seventh… . Also in the league, George Yarno pitched out of two bases-loaded jams and Moscow (8-10) upset visiting Coeur d’Alene 8-3 to knock the Vikings (14-3) into a first-place tie. Blake Whiteman doubled and tripled for CdA, which is tied with Lewiston with two games left… . Derek Bruce had an RBI triple in the first, two-run single in the third and a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to lead Lewiston (14-3) to a 10-5 win over visiting West Valley (1-11). WV’s Jason Hollifield had a two-run double in the third… . Lake City’s game at Post Falls was rained out and rescheduled for Friday… . Sandpoint’s home game against Colville was also rained out, but no makeup date was announced.

Andy Belzer struck out four and walked two in five innings, and Chewelah (9-9) defeated visiting Newport 5-0 to complete its Great Northern League season. Chewelah scored three in the fourth with no hits. Newport finished its season 2-18, 2-16… . Also in the league, Lakeside’s game at Deer Park was postponed and rescheduled for Thursday… . Medical Lake’s game at Riverside was rained out.

Boys golf

Chewelah’s Gary Hentges shot a 5-over-par 77 for a one-stroke win at the GNL tournament at The Fairways Golf Course. Medical Lake’s Joey Lawrence finished second, two strokes ahead of Pullman’s Ryan Bidle. Pullman won the team title with a 426, three shots ahead of Chewelah. Nineteen golfers qualified for Tuesday’s district tournament at Hangman Valley Golf Course.

Boys soccer

Keoni Dang set up the first goal and scored the second on a penalty kick, and Cheney (10-4-2, 6-0) completed a perfect Frontier League season with a 3-0 win over visiting Colville (9-6-1, 2-3-1) Monday. Colville, the league’s No. 3 seed, plays a loser-out match at No. 2 West Valley (9-5-2) Thursday. The winner will qualify for the regional tournament and play at Cheney on Saturday for seeding.

GSL rained out

The Greater Spokane League’s scheduled quadrupleheader at Franklin Park was postponed by wet grounds. The games were rescheduled for 3:45 p.m. today on the home teams’ fields. The schedule is: Gonzaga Prep at University, Ferris at East Valley, Central Valley at North Central, Shadle Park at Mt. Spokane and Mead at Rogers.

Candice Birchell struck out six and walked none, and pinch-runner Laura Gilmour scored on a fielder’s choice in the seventh as Cheney (4-9) edged visiting Clarkston 2-1 in the Border League.

Gilmour ran for Marya Lahti-Lamb, who reached on an error and had two singles in the game. Clarkston is 2-10… . Also in the league, Blake Hoorelbeke struck out eight and had two RBIs in the third as Coeur d’Alene (14-3) notched a 10-4 win at Moscow (8-11). Stranger finished 3 for 3. The Vikings tied Lake City for first place with two games left… . West Valley’s home game with Lewiston was postponed and rescheduled for today… . Lake City’s game at Post Falls was postponed and rescheduled for Friday… . Sandpoint’s home game against Colville was also rained out, but no makeup date was announced.

Newport’s doubleheader at Riverside was postponed. No makeup date was announced for the GNL games.
