It Takes Two Months, But Waves Roll Over Gonzaga

Pepperdine (31-19, 18-6 WCC) scored six runs on two hits and two Gonzaga errors in the seventh inning as the Waves posted a 11-5 victory over the Bulldogs (25-19, 15-9 WCC) Thursday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.

The game was resumed in the bottom of the second inning after being rained out in Spokane two months ago.

Picking up the game in the bottom of the second with Gonzaga as the home team, the Waves immediately set down the Bulldogs after having fallen behind 1-0 two months prior.

Gonzaga went ahead 3-1 in the fourth on RBI singles from Eric Rodland and Brian Munhall. That lead held up until the sixth inning, when Pepperdine tied it by scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

The Waves added six runs in the seventh off three Gonzaga pitchers. Five walks, an error and a passed ball contributed to the Waves’ big inning.

Jason Bay hit a two-run home run for Gonzaga in the bottom of the seventh. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but the game ended on a double-play grounder.

Bay and Barry Matthews led the Zags with three hits each. Bay led the team with three RBIs. Matthews extended his hitting streak to 18 games.

Pepperdine reduced its magic number for clinching the West Division to two. Pepperdine also wins the regular-season series between the two schools and would host the West Coast Conference baseball playoffs should both Pepperdine and Gonzaga win their divisions.

Gonzaga falls to three games behind Loyola Marymount in the Coast Division. The Zags stay in the Los Angeles area for a three-game set against the No. 14 Lions. Today’s game starts at 2:30 p.m. A doubleheader on Sunday begins at 11 a.m.
