Garth Cummings scored at 82 minutes Friday, allowing the Spokane Shadow to tie the Cascade Surge at 2 in a season-opening match at Willamette University Stadium.

Cummings, playing his first game for Spokane, entered with 15 minutes left in a 2-1 match. Dan Huet of Gonzaga University assisted.

The match remained tied after two 10-minute overtimes. The league has thrown out the shootout format, leaving the U.S. Open Cup qualifier in a deadlock.

Jeff Rose, out of Central Valley High and Whitworth, gave the Shadow a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal at 44 minutes. Andrew Wareing and Chris McDonald scored second-half goals for the Surge.

Spokane next travels to Memorial Stadium for a 2 p.m. Sunday match against the Seattle Sounders Selects. Spokane’s first home match is next Saturday, against the Willamette Valley Firebirds.
