Cyclists Stage Small Protest Downtown

A dozen protesters on bicycles briefly slowed traffic downtown Saturday afternoon, demanding fewer cars and more bike lanes.

The riders said they were part of Critical Mass, a loosely knit international movement that sponsors impromptu rides designed to slow down traffic and raise awareness of bicycle issues.

The group shut down two lanes of traffic at the corner of Monroe and Riverside for about 10 minutes. Six Spokane Police officers redirected traffic. The protesters said they plan to start monthly Critical Mass rides downtown this summer.
