Folsom Keys Mead’S Win, Ousting Cv

Matt Folsom has turned into quite a Bear hunter.
The Mead star had a part in three of his teams four goals on Saturday and led the Panthers to a 4-1 victory over Central Valley in a District 8 4A loser-out game at Mead.
His heroics came less than two weeks after he scored an overtime goal to beat the Bears in a Greater Spokane League regular-season showdown late last month.
“I hate playing CV,” Folsom said, “they’re such brutes.
“Physical play is good and I like it when the ref doesn’t call everything. The refs did a good job letting the game flow.”
On Mead’s first goal, in the 25th minute of the first half, Folsom didn’t score but was fouled and a penalty kick ensued. Dan Dolan kicked the ball to the right of and past a diving Travis Johnson.
Folsom was fouled again by a CV defender, forcing another PK in the 62nd minute. This time, he took the shot and hit a hard line drive past Kam Murphy.
The Bears (10-6-1) countered with a goal by Matt Johnson 2 minutes later for CV’s only score.
“I felt like we were controlling the game enough, at the same time you don’t like to win a game on penalty goals,” said Mead coach Travis Hanson.
Mead (13-3) came up with two more goals one by Folsom, the other by Tyler Ready. Those came without the assistance of the referees.
“Some of the adjustments we made helped us - keeping the ball away from the middle,” Hanson said of what his team learned from its last game with CV.
Hanson’s fear in the middle was CV’s trio of Pete Peterson, Andy Cooper and Blair Van Antwerp. Hanson felt that midfielder Elliot Fauske and defender Dan Dolan helped neutralize the three from halting Mead’s attack.
“We were worried about Andy Cooper in the middle, but he didn’t really do anything,” Folsom said.
Mead’s goalkeeper Brian Beu made three saves. Johnson and Murphy combined for 10. Mead, second in the GSL regular season, faces regular-season champion Ferris Tuesday at Joe Albi Stadium at 4 p.m.
After the game, Hanson stood at midfield holding his daughter, Emily, and decided that he didn’t want to take the goal nets down in hopes that his team would need them next Saturday - if they beat Ferris for the GSL’s No. 1 seed.
The winner of that matchup plays host to the Big Nine’s No. 2 seed. The loser must travel and play the Big Nine’s No. 1 seed.
Pasco and Eisenhower play Tuesday for Big Nine seeding.
Phil Clapin, on a breakaway, rebounded a miss and knocked in the winner at 68 minutes to give Cheney (11-4-2) the District 7 3A title with a 3-2 win over visiting West Valley. Luke Roberts and Mike Shafer of the Eagles (10-6-2) scored 6 minutes apart to tie the match at 2 with 42 minutes left. WV, the No. 2 seed, hosts Mid-Valley No. 3 Selah on Tuesday in a regional loser-out match. The winner will play MV No. 1 Hanford on Thursday at a site to be determined. Cheney plays Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s match between West Valley (Yakima) and Prosser.
Jake Moug totaled three goals and one assist, and Eric Pierce scored twice as GNL champion Riverside eliminated Deer Park 6-0 in the first round of the District 7 2A playoffs at Riverside. Riverside (14-0-2) will host Pullman at noon on Saturday for a berth in the State 2A quarterfinals… . In the day’s first match at Riverside, Bobo Heim shot from 7 yards to open the scoring and Gary Shen followed with a 20-yard goal as Pullman (15-2) eliminated Medical Lake 4-1. The Cardinals finished 6-10-1.
