Massingale Pitches Huskies Over Cougars

Matt Massingale (6-5) threw his third consecutive complete game and Ed Erickson drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth to lift Washington (21-23, 4-15) to a 5-4 Pac-10 Conference baseball win over visiting Washington State.

Massingale tied a career high with 10 strikeouts. Washington’s Tila Reynolds drew a two-out walk in the eighth and scored on Erickson’s double to right-center off reliever Zach Fisher (2-4).

Jordan Nilsen’s three-run home run for the Cougars (16-30, 5-11) tied the game at 4 in the eighth.

Eric Waltermeyer (3-2) pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Cole Young (2-3) followed with a six-hitter as Community Colleges of Spokane swept Wenatchee Valley 4-0, 3-1 to close in on the Eastern Division title.

CCS (18-7) swept the three-game series from the Knights (16-11), who entered the weekend in a near deadlock with the Sasquatch. CCS has five games left in its Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges season.

Keith Thompson of CCS had two hits in the opener. Kevin Richardson singled and doubled in the second game.

Matt Squires pitched a three-hitter to lead Whitworth (13-24, 7-13) to a 2-1 win over Pacific Lutheran in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Merkel Field.

The Lutes (19-14-1, 13-7) won the second game 2-0 as Jason Andrew pitched nine innings and Mark Lydell capped a two-run ninth with an RBI double.

Whitworth’s first-game runs came on a passed ball in the fifth and Nick Schuerman’s RBI single in the sixth.

Rowing

The Washington men’s and women’s varsity 8 crews won Windermere Cup titles during the Opening Day Regatta on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.

The men completed the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 42.68 seconds for their 10th consecutive title. The No. 1 ranked women, undefeated this season, finished in 6:29.20.

Gonzaga’s women placed second to Washington in the novice 8 and the Cascade Cup. Washington State’s women placed third in the women’s varsity 4.

Softball

Reliever Kira Bliss allowed one earned run in 4-2/3 innings as Whitworth (6-25, 5-14) defeated Pacific 9-5 to earn a split in Northwest Conference play at Forest Grove, Ore.

Jennifer Barnes and Liz Copeland homered in the opener as the Boxers (8-22, 5-15) snapped a seven-game losing streak. Aubrie Caldwell went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and Ginger Ewing went 3 for 5 for Whitworth in the second game.
