Osso Helps Cardinals Swipe Doubleheader
Keith Osso had two runs batted in each game and finished 5 for 5 in stolen bases, leading North Idaho to an 11-1, 9-0 sweep of Colorado Northwestern as the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball season ended in Rangeley, Colo.
NIC (30-19, 19-13) rapped out 21 hits and held the Spartans to six.
Rob Sumner had two RBIs in the first game and tripled in the second game.
The Cardinals have qualified for the Region 18 tournament, which begins Wednesday at Dixie College in St. George, Utah.
Matt Massingale (6-5) threw his third consecutive complete game and Ed Erickson drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth to lift Washington (21-23, 4-15) to a 5-4 win over visiting Washington State in the Pacific-10 Conference.
Massingale tied a career high with 10 strikeouts. Washington’s Tila Reynolds drew a two-out walk in the eighth and scored on Erickson’s double to right-center off reliever Zach Fisher (2-4). Erickson also hit a home run, the 40th of his career, in the third inning.
Jordan Nilsen’s three-run home run to right-center for the Cougars (16-30, 5-11) tied the game at 4 in the eighth.
Eric Waltermeyer (3-2) pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Cole Young (2-3) followed with a six-hitter as Community Colleges of Spokane swept Wenatchee Valley 4-0, 3-1 to move closer to the Eastern Division title.
CCS (18-7) swept the three-game series from the Knights (16-11), who entered the weekend in a near deadlock with the Sasquatch. CCS has five games left in its Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges season.

Matt Squires pitched a threehitter to lead Whitworth (13-24, 7-13) to a 2-1 win over Pacific Lutheran in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Merkel Field.
The Lutes (19-14-1, 13-7) won the second game 2-0 as Jason Andrew pitched nine innings and Mark Lydell capped a two-run ninth with an RBI double.
Whitworth’s first-game runs came on a passed ball in the fifth and Nick Schuerman’s RBI single in the sixth.
