Spokane police issued 12 citations in about an hour during a “pedestrian emphasis” at 12th and South Grand Thursday morning.

Tickets were given to drivers who failed to stop for a pedestrian who was crossing Grand in a crosswalk.

The police had an officer in civilian clothing walk into the crosswalk area where he had the right of way. Officers on motorcycles and in marked police cars were watching nearby.

Motorists who failed to stop were cited about two blocks away. The fine is $71 for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Later Thursday, similar stings were conducted at the bottom of Monroe Street hill at Dalton and at Wellesley and Madison. The operation will continue through the summer.
