Kaiser, Union Plan More Talks

From Staff

Kaiser Aluminum Corp. and the United Steelworkers of America union ended negotiations Friday promising to meet again next week in Minneapolis.

That was welcome news to Spokane Steelworkers who met Leo Gerard, one of the USWA’s top international officers, Friday afternoon on the picket line. He stood on a log at the Trentwood plant and told the crowd of about 100 that the talks will continue.

Gerard, who rode up to the group of pickets on the back of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by a Steelworker, said he came to Spokane to show the 2,100 locked-out union members here that the union was behind them. “A lot of people are watching what’s going on here with Kaiser,” he said. “We recognize what you’re all up against.”

Gerard will also speak this morning at 9 a.m. at a Steelworker rally in Riverfront Park before the Junior Lilac Parade.

Negotiations to end the 19-month labor dispute are slated to continue May 17-19.
