Freeman Boys, Colfax Girls Dominate

Area teams had big days on Saturday at state-qualifying track meets.
The Freeman boys and Colfax girls rolled to huge wins in the District 6-7 1A meet at Ephrata.
With Bill DePell and Reid Carroll winning two events, Freeman scored 161 points to beat Lake Roosevelt by 60. The Colfax girls had 159 points behind double-winner Liz Mellor. Freeman was second at 109 as Laura Halvorson won three events.
With a couple meet records and nine event championships, St. John-Endicott raced to the girls District 9B track championship at the Mooberry Track Complex in Pullman.
The Eagles rolled up 128 points to defeat DeSales by 13 points.
DeSales won the boys title with 111 points, followed by Tekoa-Oakesdale, which got three wins and a meet record from Seth Perrins, with 84.
All meets advanced two to state, except for the 9B boys, which advanced three. The state meets are in Cheney next weekend, as is the 2A.
District 6-7 1A
DePell won the 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.75) for Freeman and helped the Scotties win the 400 relay (44.7).
Carroll swept the 1,600 (4:38) and 3,200 (10:12.46).
The Scotties also picked up wins by Tom Ward in the 400 (51.69) and Andy Miller in the long jump (20-9-3/4).
Other Northeast A winners were Josh McMillan of Kettle Falls in the 300 hurdles (40.88) and Jeet Dillon of Colfax in the high jump (6-4).
Lizzy Mellor sparked the Colfax girls by winning the 100 hurdles (16.35) and the high jump (5-0). Teammates Michelle Appell and Tara Tribett won the 200 (25.21) and the discus (111-3), respectively.
Freeman’s Halverson won the 800 (2:27.92), 1,600 (5:30.3) and 3,200 (12:13).
District 9B
Junior Kim Olson and freshman Melody Anderson were double winners for St. John-Endicott, which also won the 400 and 800 relays.
Olson won the 100 (13.0) and 200 (26.6). Anderson took the 1,600 (5:43.1) and 3,200 (12:28.1).
Bre Schmick set a meet record in the 300 hurdles, running 46.6. Also winning for the Eagles was Christine Conrath in the 800 (2:37.8) and Jen Hedlund in the javelin (108-8).
Danielle Ayers-Stamper of LaCrosse-Washtucna set a meet record in the long jump, soaring 18-2-1/4, more than 11 inches past the mark she established as a freshman last year. She also won the 100 hurdles (15.1).
Tekoa-Oakesdale’s Perrins erased one of the oldest records in the books.
Perrins went 14-7 in the pole vault, an inch higher than Keith Nelson did in 1981 for St. John. Perrins also won the 100 (11.2) and javelin (167-1) and the Nighthawks won the 400 relay (45.3).
B.J. Bezdicek of St. John-Endicott won the 1,600 (4:44.5) and 3,200 (10:21.4).
