New Life Evolved From Bible Class

Church: New Life Community Church, 6100 E. Hayden, Rathdrum.

Congregation: The church has 2,700 members.

History: The church was founded in 1992 as a Bible study class in the home of the Rev. Bruce Miles, who died of cancer last year. The church’s first rented meeting place was the old GTE building in Coeur d’Alene. A 450-seat sanctuary was built on the current site in Rathdrum in 1994, and almost immediately a 350-seat addition was built on.

Services: Worship begins at 7:45, 9:15 and 11 a.m. each Sunday (687-3606).

Affiliation: Nondenominational.

Spiritual leader: Rev. Terry Gurno.

Background: Gurno, 39, received a bachelor’s degree from Northwest College in 1995. He has served at New Life for three years.

Reason for becoming a pastor: “I felt God wanted me to. I know that sounds simple, but that’s why.”

Favorite part of the job: “People. I’ve always appreciated the uniqueness of each person and believe everyone has been created for a purpose.”

The Bible’s most important message: “That God knows you and loves you and He has a plan for you.”

In other news

Now that summer is just around the corner, it’s time for vacation Bible school season to begin.

The first of the season, “Holy Word Studios,” will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Master at 4800 N. Ramsey Road in Coeur d’Alene.

Children age 3 to 5 will meet June 12-16, and elementary students in grades K-5 will meet June 19-23. All participants will have the opportunity to make crafts, play games and sing songs.

The Church of the Master also is switching to its summer worship schedule on Sunday. The church will now offer worship services at 7:30, 8:30 and 10 a.m. each Sunday. Sunday school classes will resume in the fall.
