Flag Presentation

Vet honored. Nearly 56 years after her husband was killed in combat in World War II, Spokane’s Betty Piller on Tuesday was presented with five medals and a flag that has flown over the nation’s Capitol. U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt, R-Wash., presented the honors. Frank J. Piller was a private in the 91st Infantry Division that saw ferocious combat as the Allies fought their way along the mountains of Italy. Piller was killed on July 7, 1944, in an engagement in which only 20 of the 200 soldiers in his company survived after they were cut off without food, water or ammunition.
