Official Payments Corporations is working with the county Treasurer’s Office to let people pay real estate and personal property taxes. September unemployment statistics show 8.7 percent of registered workers in the county were looking for work. Out of an insured work force of 2,480, nearly 220 people were drawing unemployment benefits. One year earlier, only 7.2 percent here were jobless. The state unemployment rate for September 2000 was 4.2 percent.

Grant County

City police say there has been a rash of car break-ins. Residents are being advised to keep valuables in their homes. Police reported eight car break-ins Oct. 25 alone.

Lincoln County

With temperatures falling and power rates rising, local residents in need are reminded of the Energy Assistance Program. Low-income people can sign up for help with their electricity bills, as well as receive vouchers for wood, kerosene oil or any other heating substance. Applications will be taken Thursday and Friday on the first floor of the Wilbur Lutheran Church from 4 to 7 p.m. Applicants should bring Social Security cards and income records for all adults in the household from August, September and October. They should also bring their past 12 months of heating bills.

The stage in the city park is set and may be usable by spring. The stage itself is just phase one of the project, which will eventually be a full-fledged amphitheater.

The city has purchased a Pond Doctor a device to stir up waters of the sewage plant. This aerates the sludge and helps it break down faster and more efficiently.

A group from Ghana will perform traditional African music and dance at the Neill Public Library on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Ghanaian group Ocheami will open a series of cultural programs at the library. And on Friday, the group will jam with those in the community interested in world music at 6:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Middle School gymnasium.

As a senior project, two Lakeside High School students have taken on the task of building a new skateboard park in Plummer. Jeremy Armstrong and Jeremy Schultz are part of a group that dedicated itself to raising funds for the park. About $800 was raised through concession sales and donations. The two seniors have also been building items for the park with donated materials.

The Hayden Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars is dedicating all service flags and the new Avenue of Flags at the Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday. City officials and politicians are invited.

During the third annual History Day, the Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway will be investigating how it was and what it has become. A guest speaker, musical entertainment and refreshments will be offered at the free event presented from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the high school.

Donations are needed for the Country Chef Christmas Fund to help needy families during the holidays. Winter parking restrictions in Libby start today and run through March 30. To make snow removal easier, vehicles may not park on any north-south streets between 4 and 8 a.m. or on any east-west streets between 8 a.m. and noon.
