Whitworth Tops Whitman Again

Whitworth won for the seventh time in eight matches on Wednesday, hitting .478 during a 15-0 first game and sweeping visiting Whitman 3-0 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match.

Lindsey Wagstaff and Gretchen Smith had four kills apiece to lead the Pirates (16-8, 11-4) in the first game. Kristen Turner had five kills to help Whitworth rally from a 7-3 deficit in the second game.

The Missionaries (16-10, 7-8) tied the final game at 10 after trailing 8-1. Whitworth scored the final five points to wrap up its second sweep of Whitman this season.

Beth Vercic totaled 17 kills and 22 digs to guide CCS (26-19, 6-3 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) to a 3-1 win over Blue Mountain CC at Spokane Falls CC.

Marlo Urdahl and Melissa French of CCS combined for 28 kills. Emily Csoros of the Timberwolves (1-8) had 16 digs and 10 kills. CCS swept BMCC four weeks ago.

Men’s soccer

T. Ghezzi’s one-touch shot from 10 yards out in the 87th minute allowed CCS (12-5-4, 10-3-2) to edge Columbia Basin 1-0 in an NWAACC match at SFCC.

The Hawks (7-8-1) failed to clear the ball on defense, resulting in Trevor Tharp’s pass to Ghezzi. CCS nearly scored in the first 5 minutes on Nathan Crary’s shot off the crossbar. CCS also topped CBCC four weeks ago by the same score.

Women’s soccer

Jamie Hudson scored the first goal and assisted on the final score as Columbia Basin (12-2-2) topped CCS 3-0 in an NWAACC match at SFCC.

The Sasquatch (6-14-3, 4-10-1) dropped a 5-0 match to the Hawks four weeks ago.
