Blowing Snow Closes Highway

Wind, snow and ice forced state transportation officials to close portions of highways in eastern Montana Thursday and advise emergency travel only on others.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 were closed from Glendive to the North Dakota line Thursday morning - a stretch of about 35 miles - because of extremely poor visibility, Highway Patrol Sgt. Edward Hilbert said. In North Dakota, officials closed I-94 from Dickinson west to the Montana border.

The east-bound lanes were reopened late Thursday afternoon when conditions improved.

National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Kuhl said snow amounts ranged mostly from 3 to 6 inches in eastern Montana, but some isolated areas received as much as 10 to 12 inches.

Steady winds of 30 to 40 mph created whiteout conditions in many areas throughout the morning.
