Adams County Washtucna
The high school civics class hopes to get the town included as an Arbor Day Tree City, U.S.A. The plan began in fall 1999, and kids are making their dream a reality by planting trees and cleaning up portions of town. The class received a grant from the Department of Natural Resources to purchase the trees, which they planted last month.
Ferry County Republic
The Ferry County Technology Center has exhausted its National Park Service grant funding. Hoping to keep the free service available, the county commissioners will apply for $4,200 in Displaced Timber Workers funds through the Department of Social and Health Services.
Grant County Soap Lake
Soap Lake schools now have their own Web site. The site, a work in progress, still has a few bugs. However, the district felt it was important to get it up and running for the community and those who may move here. General school information and upcoming events are being displayed, but as the site expands, more offerings, such as class homework assignments and information from board members and teachers, will be included. The site is at www.slsd.wednet.edu.
Lincoln County Reardan
Student athletes convicted of a felony will lose one year of sports eligibility, the Reardan School Board recently decided. The board considered misdemeanors as well, but no final decision has been made. The issue of double jeopardy is a sensitive one, board members said. They are wrestling with whether a school should punish a student who is already being punished by the legal system.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Support is building for a wholesale product distribution center in the county. Backers of the plan include Ponderay Newsprint, the Port of Pend Oreille and several community groups and businesses. They say the center would not only create jobs, but would also help local businesses and bring in tax revenue.
Spokane County Cheney
The Eastern Washington University JFK Library is playing host to an interactive play today to raise money for extra books. Tickets cost $50. A cast of role players will lead participants through a fictional scenario where they must find clues to solve a mystery. To make reservations, call (509) 359-2264.
Stevens County Colville
The city has announced it will pick up leaves piled along city streets, beginning Nov. 13. Residents can rake their leaves just past the curb, or place bagged leaves at the edge of the street. Branches and other yard waste will not be picked up, nor will leaves put out after the Nov. 12 deadline.
Whitman County St. John
Craig and Kelly Hudkins recently bought the small pharmacy in St. John from Bryan Key of Pullman. Craig Hudkins is a Washington State University pharmacy school graduate and has worked in some large chain pharmacies. His wife is studying pre-pharmacy in Spokane and plans to earn a pharmacy degree at WSU. They plan to add to the store’s merchandise, but for the most part expect to run the pharmacy in same manner as its previous owners.

Benewah County St. Maries
The Kiwanis Club elected officers during an October meeting. Jim Scourey is president, Jim McCuaig is president-elect, Cal Campbell is sergeant-at-arms, Jim Cormana is treasurer and Ginny Oakes is secretary.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Nominations for citizen of the year are being accepted by the chamber of commerce until Nov. 10. Nominations must be in writing and for an individual who has dedicated time, talent and personal resources to better the community. Past recipients of the award include Dave Nygren, Rick Cox, Church Bauer, Bill and Lorriane Bowman and Marcella Nelson. Send nominations to the chamber at P.O. Box 928, Sandpoint, ID 83864. The award will be presented during the chamber’s annual meetingreception, from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 16.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
A ground-breaking ceremony was held recently for the new Bonners Ferry Seventh-day Adventist Church School, three miles north of Three Mile Corner on U.S. Highway 95. The new school will be able to accommodate 50 students, and will have classroom space for eight grades, a library, gym, administrative offices and a kitchen.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The annual Toys for Tots run will start at noon Saturday at the River City Lanes Bowling Alley, Post Falls. A complimentary breakfast of huckleberry pancakes and sausage will be served from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate. Several stops in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene are planned. After the run, an all-you-can-eat barbecue will be served for $3. For more information, call Rhonda at (208) 687-9942.
Latah County Moscow
A candidates forum will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Moscow High School by the Moscow League of Women Voters. State and local candidates will answer questions. Mardi Baron will moderate the forum.

Lincoln County Libby
The newly formed Central Pride Chapter of the Montana Career Association aims to teach job skills to students who don’t intend to go to a four-year college. Officers sworn in by Central School instructor Todd Berget are: Hannah Chandler, president; Sam Sutherland, vice president; Ernie Roberts, treasurer, and Becky Cosgriff, secretary.
