Adams County Othello
The local school district is combating head lice. The state considers lice to be a contagious disease. Nurses and volunteers check for head lice twice each year at Hiawatha Elementary School - at the beginning of the school year and right after Christmas break. The district urges all parents to check their children and become educated about lice prevention.
Ferry County Republic
Parents who want to give their kids a leg up on kindergarten are invited to check out the local Head Start program. The program is accepting 3- and 4-year-olds to take part in this federally-funded pre-school. Classes run Monday through Thursday and last four hours. Grant County Ephrata
The Grant County Solid Waste Program has expanded its recycling program to include free motor oil collection. Folks can take up to five gallons of oil to the Grant County Landfill near Ephrata, or to drop boxes at Coulee City, Hartline, Wilson Creek, Warden, O’Sullivan, Royal City, Quincy and Mattawa. The public is asked not to mix the oil with antifreeze, degreasers, gasoline, water or solvents. For information, call (509) 754-6082.
Lincoln County Wilbur
Wilbur’s downtown skating rink has an added attraction, thanks to a local Eagle Scout candidate. Kyle Engelson, a junior at Wilbur High, has installed basketball hoops at the rink. Engelson felt the hoops would increase year-round use of the rink, which is open for inline skating and skateboarding during the spring and summer, and ice skating and hockey in the winter. Avista, the Lincoln County Mobilization group, and Engelson’s dad and friends were instrumental in getting the project done.
Pend Oreille County Metaline
The Selkirk School’s music program has been asked to help set national standards for music education. Music director Donivan Johnson reports he was nominated on the state level as “a teacher who emphasizes listening to, analyzing, and describing music as being an important means of music learning.” Johnson is happy to help with the research, and is preparing lesson plans for the study, which will set benchmarks for student musical performances.
Spokane County Spokane
The Lincoln Heights Police Substation is holding a fund-raiser at the Silver Lanes Bowling Center, 3023 E. 28th Ave., Sunday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. All proceeds from bowling that day will go toward the community policing center’s annual budget.
Stevens County Marcus
Citizens here are eagerly awaiting the transcription of recent city council minutes. It seems former Building Inspector Mike Clash has contacted the city clerk to say he has not resigned, at least not on paper, from his post. Council notes provided by a citizen show that Clash contacted the clerk upon discovering he no longer held the building inspector post. City officials say Clash resigned verbally at an earlier meeting. The tapes of that meeting are being reviewed.
Whitman County Pullman
Young women who are high school juniors are invited to an informational meeting about the Pullman Junior Miss Scholarship program at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Pullman High School. The program, which awards up to $7,000 in cash scholarships, is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. The winner receives a full-year tuition scholarship at Washington State University.
IDAHO
Benewah County Plummer
Students in Lakeside elementary and middle schools will have no classes Nov. 9 and 10 because parent/teacher conferences will be held. Students have been working on skits, songs and recitations to entertain veterans during a Veterans Day Program set for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the elementary school in Worley.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Joyce Carson of Garfield Bay caught the first-place fish in the second annual Captn’s Table Halloween Derby. Carson’s fish was a 24-pound 6-ounce rainbow trout. Jody Mailer of Spirit Lake took second place with her 17-pound 7-ounce rainbow trout and Bill Thomas of Washington, took third with his 15-pound 5-ounce rainbow. About 150 fisherman competed in the event held last weekend.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Residents may go to the following locations to vote; Mount Hall School for those in the Copeland Precinct, Naples Fire Hall for those in the Naples Precinct, National Guard Armory for those in the Valley View Precinct, Sater’s Auction Hall for those in the Moyie Precinct, Veterans Memorial Hall for those in the Bonners Ferry, Kootenai and North Bonners Ferry Precincts. Registration on election day will be allowed with picture identification and proof of address.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Latah County Moscow
Moscow Care Center is seeking donations for activity programs for residents and to spruce up the seniors’ rooms. Among the center needs are potted plants, wood working crafts, arts/craft supplies, fabric, silk flowers, birds and cages, seasonal decorations, Christmas gifts and room decorations. Gloria Noyen was named Shoshone Medical Center’s employee of the month for October. Noyen started in 1995 and works in the business office. She and her husband live in Smelterville where they own and manage the Wayside Market.

Lincoln County Troy
Construction is set to begin next spring on a new senior citizens center. Funding will be provided by a $427,693 Community Block Grant. The new center will be built at the corner of Third Street and Kootenai Avenue. The project budget is set at $650,000.
