Othello
The Old Hotel Art Gallery has been named to the Washington Heritage Register. One of only three of the town’s original commercial structures still standing, the Old Hotel was built in 1912. The building was occupied from the day it opened in 1912 until a grisly murder took place there - the night it closed in 1974. It was turned into an art gallery in 1975.

With Veterans Day coming up, the local American Legion Auxiliary is asking for clothing items, blankets and other items that can be sent to veterans hospitals during the Christmas season. Auxiliary members will meet the week before Thanksgiving to sort, wrap and mail the items. Drop boxes for donations are in several local businesses. For information, call (509) 775-3768.

The U.S. Department of Energy sent $631,332 to Grant County, and several junior tax districts, as payment in lieu of taxes for lands on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. The county road fund received $112,365, while the Wahluke School District got $299,605.

There will be no trees along the downtown business corridor. The City Council, without member Eleanor MacDonald, voted against planting trees in the gaps left in the city’s new sidewalks. MacDonald, who was in the hospital, said she would have voted for trees. Mayor Chuck Johnston cast the tie-breaking vote.
Pend Oreille County

The daily operations of the International Selkirk Loop, a planned scenic tourism route, will no longer be headquartered in Pend Oreille County. The group has moved its offices to Sandpoint.

Spokane Valley
The Central Valley Bear Booster Club will host its 41st annual ham dinner Wednesday. The event, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Central Valley High School, raises money for scholarships for seniors. Cost is $5 per person or $25 for a family of five or more; senior citizens and children 6-12 years old pay $4.

Whitman Hospital may have to expand. The facility this year is expected to more than double the number of admissions it had in 1991. The hospital has had to send some patients to Pullman. Hospital Administrator Gordon Mclean would like to hire six more nurses.

St. Maries
High school and middle school students will be competing at 7 p.m. Friday in the Idaho Drug Free Youth’s annual Guinness Records Competition held at Heyburn Elementary Cafeteria. Competitors try to break records set by past students in events such as the banana eating contest. Last year about 100 students competed.

Sandpoint
Old photos of logging, railroads, fishing or portraits of people are being requested by the Bonner County Historical Museum to be photographed for a video to mark the Sandpoint Centennial Celebration. Other items requested are pictures or things pertaining to the presence of Native Americans in the early part of the century. To submit an item call the museum at(208) 263-2344.

The annual Coats for Kids campaign is in full swing by the Boundary County Education Association. Good, clean used coats may be dropped at local elementary or secondary schools. The coats will be cleaned by Alpine Cleaners and given to parents for their children during parent/ teacher conferences Thursday and Friday.

The University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene will offer a bachelor of science degree in psychology starting spring semester 2001. The Potlatch Christmas Parade Committee has set the fifth annual Lighted Christmas Parade for 5 p.m. Dec. 9. Starr Kelso, Bud Riley, Don Beehner and Dr. James Lynn were inducted into the Wallace High School Hall of Fame Saturday. Lynn played and lettered in three sports and was the master of ceremonies. Riley was a University of Idaho athlete and coach at the WHS. Kelso was an outstanding athlete in three sports. Beehner starred in football, basketball, track and was outstanding in baseball.
