Spokane Settles For Tie After Third-Period Collapse Sutherby’S Hat Trick In Final Stanza Propelled Moose Jaw

Brian Sutherby scored three third-period goals, the last with 24 seconds left in regulation, and Moose Jaw roared back to tie the Spokane Chiefs 5-5 in Tuesday’s Western Hockey League play.

Spokane led 5-3 after Tim Smith, Matt Keith and Ryan Thorpe scored during a span of less than 7 minutes in the third period.

The Spokane advantage remained two goals until Sutherby scored with less than 4 minutes left. Sutherby’s final goal then came on an assist by Sean O’Connor, who is tied with Sutherby with a team-high 10 goals.

Spokane played the first 1-1/2 minutes of overtime shorthanded, but kept the Warriors out of the net. Moose Jaw finished 1 for 9 on the power play.

Neither team scored during the 5-minute extra period. Both teams finished with 31 shots on the night.

Brandin Cote scored his eighth goal and Lynn Loyns his ninth for Spokane.

The game was the first of four the Chiefs will play during a five-day swing against East Division teams. Spokane takes on the Regina Pats tonight.

The Chiefs are 8-6-0-1 for the season. Moose Jaw is 8-6-2-1.
