Lucent Technologies, stung by a string of disappointing profits, plans to streamline its upper management, enhance employee incentives and eliminate what analysts say could be as much as 10,000 jobs, or 10 percent of its work force.

Federated Department Stores Inc. on Wednesday reported a third quarter loss as problems with its Fingerhut direct-to-consumer sales unit continued to hurt earnings. For the quarter ended Oct. 28, Federated reported a loss of $668 million, or $3.32 per share, compared with profits of $123 million, or 56 cents per share, for the same period last year.
