Veterans Honored

Veterans will be recognized this week in school assemblies and receptions across the Spokane Valley.

The Valley Christian School will perform its veterans program at 9:30 a.m. Friday and again at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The program is called “So Proudly It Stands, Our American Flag” and will emphasize patriotic music sung by Valley Christian students. The program will feature an appearance by Judson Lockwood, a Spokane resident and World War II veteran who wrote about the American flag in a story called “I Am Your Flag.”

All veterans are invited to Valley Christian, at 2303 S. Bowdish, and will be honored.

West Valley High School’s leadership class is organizing its annual Veteran’s Day assembly. Vietnam veteran Roger Schjeldahl will be the keynote speaker. Schjeldahl led a long-range patrol team in Vietnam and commanded a company in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army.

East Valley High School is also holding an assembly at 9:30 a.m. Friday to honor veterans, including those on the high school staff. All veterans are invited.

At University High School, students will learn about the etiquette regarding the flag and national anthem, as well as the origins and meaning of Veterans Day. They will also honor veterans who work at U-Hi, as well as U-Hi grads who died in the military.

Central Valley High School students will view a video that focuses on the importance of Veterans Day from a WWII veteran’s point of view and why Veterans Day should be important to young people today.

Several elementary schools are also holding receptions honoring veterans.
