The hospital’s emergency medical services department has been exploring ways to add up to six volunteers to its ambulance crew. Some of the larger processing plants in town have been asked to let willing employees volunteer, but said only salaried employees could be spared. A paid emergency medical technician, who would work at the hospital while awaiting emergencies, would make about $36,000 annually with benefits - too pricey for a rural hospital.

The Webber family will be the beneficiaries of the Trinity Lutheran Church women’s annual bazaar and bake sale. Both Stan and Karen Webber are battling serious medical conditions. The bazaar is Nov. 17 at the church (one block east of the post office) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Baked goods and Christmas items will be featured.

Baker Produce of Kennewick is in the process of closing a deal to purchase the Oregon Potato Co. Final papers should be signed by the first week in December. OPC has struggled in getting an adequate supply of potatoes from local growers, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. Baker Produce officials said they think they have enough contracts with local growers to turn the situation around.

Almira

Seeds of Change is the name of a local group hoping to rebuild Almira’s business core. The group plans to develop an RV park with showers and laundry facilities to attract Grand Coulee Dam visitors, as well as a business cooperative to bring a coffee shop and other businesses to town. Currently, there is no store or restaurant in Almira.

Holy Family Hospital, Fairwinds Northpointe and Inland Northwest Health Services will sponsor “A Lifetime of Discovery - If I Didn’t Laugh, I’d Cry: The Humor and Reality of Caregiving” on Monday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Holy Family Hospital Health Education Center. A panel of caregivers and health care professionals will offer stories and suggestions on how to cope with difficult situations and give yourself permission to laugh. The cost is $10. The state Department of Natural Resources has ticketed 51 businesses and individuals statewide for violations of state forest practice rules. Seven of those ticketed were in Stevens County. A host of stop-work orders and notices of failure to comply were issued here between March and May. Some violators didn’t have proper permits, while others were cutting too close to critical wildlife areas.

Police parking officers have a new tool - a computer that prints out waterproof parking tickets and tells officers whether a car is stolen. When officers finish their shifts, they can download the ticket information and a program will file and print out letters to the violators. The new system is used by more than 100 parking departments across the country. The previous system was 10 years old and came from a company that went out of business five years ago.

The bus taking local fans to the University of Idaho Vandal football game will leave at 4 p.m. Saturday from Lakeside Middle School. The game starts at 6 p.m. Tickets to the game and the bus ride were provided by the UI.

Priest Lake Association members concerned about the growing methamphetamine problem have teamed with the Idaho State Police to present a free educational seminar on how to identify meth labs and users. The seminar will be presented from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Inn at Priest Lake. An ISP officer will give advice on what to do when a meth lab is suspected. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game wants to remind hunters not to shoot mule deer does in Unit 1, although hunters may take white-tailed deer, either sex, all season. Local Members of the Marine Corps League will be observing the 225th birthday of the Corps today at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. A social hour, the 4th Annual Ball conducted by the Pappy Boyington Detachment, and dinner followed by cake-cutting ceremonies honoring Marines present will be included. “The Joys and Challenges of Raising Adopted Children” will be presented by author Lois Melina. Melina was editor and publisher of the Adopted Children newsletter for 19 years and has written four books on the subject. The third-highest Shoshone County voter turnout ever was recorded for Tuesday’s general election, County Clerk Marcia Wingfield said. Of the 7,956 registered voters, 5,635 voted - almost 71 percent. The highest turnout was 75.7 percent in 1992. The second-highest was 72.9 percent in 1996.

Local veterans and color guard will have a memorial service to honor veterans at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Libby Cemetery. The public is invited to join the veterans organization and the ladies’ auxiliaries for the annual service.
