Adams County Ritzville
A new CT scanner at the East Adams Rural Hospital is getting a workout. In the first two days the machine was up and running, doctors performed eight scans and detected at least three serious illnesses. Three staff members have been trained to run the machine, and results are back from Spokane in around 30 minutes.
Ferry County Republic
The school district is looking for citizens to serve on the curriculum committee, which researches texts and makes recommendations to the school board for their use. Members are needed on the K-12 reading and language arts committee, as well as the social studies and health textbook committees. Call (509) 775-3172.
Grant County Ephrata
The City Council is studying privatizing garbage pickup. Three private trash companies submitted proposals for the city to use in cost comparison studies. The city hopes to decide before December, when the 2001 budget will be formally adopted.
Lincoln County Odessa
Ed Hayden, new owner of the Odessa Motel, has been setting up and hosting the monthly Odessa Bluegrass Jam and Opry. The acoustic jam sessions run from 2 to 11 p.m. with a potluck dinner in the middle. The Jam has brought hundreds of visitors from as far away as Canada. Now Hayden is promoting the “Battle of the Marching Bands” for high schoolers.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Five drug dogs were brought to the high school to do a sweep last week. Student lockers and cars were the main targets of the search. Eleven “hits” were made in lockers while students were in their classrooms. The dogs scented another seven possible hits in the school parking lot.
Spokane County Cheney
The Cheney Parks and Recreation Department will host an open house for the remodeled Wren Pierson Community Center at Fourth and C streets Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Stevens County Chewelah
At a recent City Council meeting, several residents complained that after the recent flushing of city water hydrants, the water was so dirty the local laundromat shut down. The owner of the 49er Motel said she had to throw away her laundered sheets due to discoloration. The city says the water is safe to drink and blames high manganese levels.
Whitman County Pullman
The Neill Public Library and the Bookie at Washington State University are celebrating National Children’s Book Week 2000 starting today. At noon, “Owl” from “Winnie the Pooh” will share stories at the Bookie. On Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., toddlers and preschoolers will have story time at the library; 7 p.m. is family storytime. Kids can wear pajamas and bring a stuffed animal or blanket.

Benewah County Plummer
The city’s garbage pickup schedule will change as of Nov. 20. Customers whose garbage is picked up on Tuesdays will be changed to a Monday pickup. There will be no change for customers who have a Thursday pickup. Garbage will be picked up on Thanksgiving.
Bonner County Priest River
The 19th annual Yacht Club Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 18 will offer kids a visit with Santa along with lunch, homemade baked goods and a chance to win a holiday dinner. The event will be at the Priest River Yacht Club, next to the Bonner West Community Park on Railroad Avenue.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Thursday’s Planning and Zoning Commission’s meeting is canceled. The commission’s meetings will now be at the Boundary County Extension office meeting room, which is handicapped accessible. The location was changed because the main courtroom is being used for night court.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
A free diabetes health fair today from noon to 4 p.m. will include screenings for blood pressure, glucose, foot health and other related complications. The fair will be at Kootenai Medical Center Health Resource Center.
Latah County Moscow
Raffle tickets for a five-bedroom, two-bathroom house - formerly the Sojourners’ Alliance homeless shelter - will be sold until minutes before the drawing at the agency’s Mad Hatter Ball the end of March. The home may viewed during an open house in conjunction with Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Tickets are $100 and are available at the agency’s office, 627 N. Van Buren St.
Shoshone County Pinehurst
Donna Durick’s dream of appearing on the “Price is Right” show with host Bob Barker came true Oct. 2. She was chosen from the 360 audience members to “come on down” and won $1,100 playing Plinko. Later she was notified she’d also won a number of other prizes. Durick’s appearance will air Nov. 22.

The Troy Veterans of Foreign Wars Junior Girls will hand out 20 baskets of homemade goodies today to veterans. A meal will be served at 5 p.m. at the Vet’s Bar for veterans and their families.
