At Last Minute, Chiefs Pull Out Another Victory

The Spokane Chiefs waited until the last minute Saturday night to keep their unbeaten streak on the road alive.

Roman Tvrdon found Lynn Loyns with 45 seconds remaining in the game and Loyns found the back of the net to lift the Chiefs to a 4-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League action at Centennial Civic Centre.

Spokane, 3-0-1 on its current road trip, upped its season mark to 11-6-1. The Chiefs had slipped ahead of Portland in the West Division standings on Friday.

Saturday, it didn’t look good early on for the Chiefs.

Brent Twordik scored on a power play at the 14:59 mark of the first period to put the Broncos, leading the East Division, up 1-0. Jay Langager, who assisted on the first goal, then scored a power-play goal of his own with 4 seconds left in the period. Down 2-0, the Chiefs had managed just two shots on offense.

Brandin Cote took care of the two-goal deficit in a matter of minutes to open the second period.

Cote netted his ninth goal of the season, with an assist from Tvrdon and Matt Keith, on the power play at 1:32. Cote followed that with No. 10 32 seconds later, also on the power play, and the game was tied. Tvrdon and Mason Wallin assisted on the play.
