WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

New Fire Chief John Cagle says it’s nice to be back in Eastern Washington. He came here from Benton County - via Michigan. Although he is the city fire chief, he does share his volunteers with the county fire district, a situation he’s committed to continue. Cagle replaces Duane Van Beek, now a regional fire investigator.

Ferry County Curlew

A public meeting on the health of Lambert, Lone Ranch, and St. Peter creeks will be Thursday at the Curlew Civic Hall at 6 p.m. The creeks and their watershed area have been under study since 1998 when they were found to be contaminated by fecal coliform.

Grant County Moses Lake

The state Department of Ecology has given DeHoog Dairy and Reynolds Dairy the “Contribution to Clean Water” award. DeHoog separates solid and liquid wastes and uses the solids for composting and animal bedding. At Reynolds, they’ve built an elevated canal that borders the property to eliminate animal runoff from entering the groundwater.

Lincoln County Wilbur

Former Wilbur Elementary Principal Donna Marvin is thanking God, and Pat Zeigner, for her new kidney. Marvin was in desperate need of a transplant when a friend told Zeigner, 54, of Grand Coulee, of her condition. The two met later, by accident, at a women’s conference in Spokane. The operation was Nov. 9. Zeigner’s kidney met four of the match criteria - a rarity for unrelated people, doctors say.

Pend Oreille County Newport

A workshop for business owners, “Shoplifting Intervention, Do’s and Don’ts,” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Newport High School library. Spokane police Sgts. Tony Giannetto and Sandy Richards will discuss new laws and court cases, and ways to prevent shoplifting.

Spokane County Cheney

Brendan Cesaratto, a music major at Eastern Washington University, presents his senior percussion recital Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the EWU Music Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Call the Music Department at 359-2241.

Stevens County Colville

Maureen “Mo” Gunderson, a former Oakland, Calif., police officer and longtime Colville community activist, will be director of the food bank. The food bank holds an ever-growing role in the community, with more families seeking help.

Whitman County Colfax

The Whitman County Library will hold a “Meet the Author” program with Spokane writer Terry Trueman at the library meeting room Thursday at 7 p.m. Trueman wrote “Stuck in Neutral,” which is narrated by a character with cerebral palsy.

Benewah County St. Maries

The St. Maries Volunteer Community Clinic is set to open the first week of December. The clinic will provide basic health care for those who can’t afford insurance and don’t qualify for medical assistance programs.

Bonner County Sandpoint

A benefit auction for Stacey Glines will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at City Forum. Glines, a sign language interpreter at Sandpoint Middle School, has breast cancer. Her friends are raising money to help pay for her treatment. Items being auctioned include season passes for Schweitzer Mountain Resort and the Festival at Sandpoint, and a kayak trip. Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Kootenai Tribal Hatchery and the British Columbia Ministry of Fisheries Hatchery released 2,000 2-year-old white sturgeon in the Kootenai River recently. The species is the largest freshwater fish in North America, can weigh up to 350 pounds and live to be more than 100 years old. The sturgeon population has decreased since the mid-1960s and was listed as endangered in 1994.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Free family entertainment, food and door prizes will be included in the Harding Family Center’s Fall Family Festival and open house Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the center, 411 N. 15th St.

Latah County Moscow

The first citizens police academy will begin in mid-February. The goal is to increase communication between police and citizens. No physical exertion is required. Registration to the nine-week session is free but enrollment is limited. Applications are at the police department, 118 E. Fourth St. Call (208) 883-7059.

Shoshone County Kellogg

Bands from Silver Hills Middle School and Kellogg High School will perform with other area bands at 7 tonight at North Idaho College Schuler Auditorium. The concert is a tribute to veterans and will include a musical tribute to the National World War II Memorial.

Lincoln County Libby

Seven local women: Chloe Adamson, Carlene Erlandson, Sue Grabinski, Sammie Hurtig, Linda Knapp, Joyce Lelm, Susie Rice and Mary Robertson spent a week in Portland volunteering for service organizations. Their days started at 5:45 a.m. making meals at a soup kitchen feeding about 600 people daily. The women are from Christ Lutheran Church and St. Joseph Catholic Church.
