Sonoco Products Co. plans to close its Spokane tube plant by year end, leaving seven people out of work, the company said Wednesday.

The company has operated at N. 2304 Dollar Road since 1990, making the tube cores used to spool metal and paper products.

“Unfortunately, the consolidation was necessary due to a decline in market demand for the products produced at our Spokane facility,” senior vice president Ronnie Holley said in a written statement.

Sonoco manufactures industrial and consumer packaging products at 285 operations in 33 countries.

The firm’s Spokane customers will be served by its plant in Lewiston, said vice president Allan Cecil.
