Veterans Day services worth media coverage

At the Veterans Day services at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens Cemetery we had a fine turnout of veterans and their families. It was clear and cold. The flags stood out sharp and clear in the snow, one on each veteran’s grave, more than 700 of them. The roadway was aligned with burial flags with the name of the deceased veteran whose family is kind enough to allow us to fly it on each Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

We had some outstanding guest speakers, two in particular I would like to thank. Amanda Raymond, a Lake City High School student, spoke of her impression of the meaning of “veteran.” Justin Kane also spoke, not a veteran but someone thanking veterans for their service. There were few dry eyes while listening to these two.

I was surprised that none of the news agencies were there. Have the public and the press forgotten the sacrifices these veterans made in serving this great nation? Dusty Rhoads Post Falls

Milestone also brings up a tragedy

Re: “New baby brings family into fifth generation,” (Nov. 11, Handle Extra). What a milestone for the Ralph family. Not many families could pose five generations in one photo. I am troubled, however, that your article glorifies a sad and alltoo-common situation. No matter how much love this baby received, she still is a baby born to an unwed high school girl.

Your article lists the challenges facing this new mother as “not enough time for homework, not enough money and no time for friends and fun.” This is a tragedy, not a milestone. The fact is, this young high school girl had sex outside of wedlock and is paying the price. Is this a milestone we should aspire to? Jane Lambert Coeur d’Alene
