Ritzville Journal editorial writer Sue Gardner says pigeons have again taken up residence above the business district. She says droppings are so slick, they cause cars to slide. The annual Ferry County Fair Association’s annual meeting will be Sunday. The board will meet at the San Poil Grange Hall at 1 p.m. for the potluck lunch and meeting. Topping the agenda is fair funding. State funding for county fairs is disappearing after this year, and the Legislature is reviewing the matter.

Officials at Grant County Public Utility District say near-record numbers of salmon returned this year to local waters, safely navigating Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams. More than 19,000 chinook and nearly 90,000 sockeye were counted, along with 11,000 steelhead. To protect fish, the utility diverts water through spillways rather than turbines during peak migration periods.

The American Legion Auxiliary stocks a gift shop at the Spokane VA hospital each year with items veterans can send to loved ones. Legion and Auxiliary members wrap and mail each gift. To help, bring a new present such as clothing, toiletries and small appliances to the Metaline Falls Trading Company, Ione Variety or Legion club before Nov. 27.

Rotary’s “Breakfast with Santa” fund-raiser is today from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Spokane Valley Mall. Tickets are $3 per person, available at the door. Proceeds will support such Rotary projects as the planned community center at Mirabeau Point and scholarships for Valley youths.

The recycling bins at Sand Canyon Road and state Highway 395 have such high usage, the county has added a second set of bins behind Chewelah’s city hall. The city says the bins can stay there as long as they don’t become a nuisance.

The 24th annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Church. The city’s three churches - Sacred Heart, United Church and the Tekoa Bible Church - will host the event that includes Bible readings, music and refreshments. The event kicks off the drive for the Christmas Fund to help people buy holiday food.

Today’s fund-raiser for Habitat For Humanity is sold out. The dinner/theater includes a four-course meal prepared by Habit for Humanity volunteers, and the comedy mystery “And So They Had None” performed by Community United Methodist Players at the church, at Ramsey and Hanley.

Jim Windisch, a University of Idaho Vandals Marching Band tuba player, proposed to his girlfriend and tuba player, Sarah Tracy, on the 50-yard line during halftime at last Saturday’s Vandals game against New Mexico State. Tracy accepted his proposal. The two met in the marching band.

The new Dove Program for terminally ill residents at Silver Wood Good Samaritan Center is in the developing stages. Staff want to create a homelike setting with caretakers encouraged to care for residents in their own unique style. Soothing patients with singing, prayers and conversation will be included. Libby Ranger District employees held their annual auction last week and raised $4,931 for programs such as Literacy Volunteers of America and Lincoln County Crimestoppers. Glen Gibson was one of the auctioneers who sold craftwork, homemade goodies and a painting at the Elks Lodge.
