Connection: Family Ties

As many as 4,000 people of Vietnamese descent live in Spokane.

One of the presidents of the Vietnamese Buddhist Community worship center in Spokane, Thach Chau, said the congregation members have been discussing President Clinton’s visit to Vietnam.

While they don’t support communism, most understand Clinton’s efforts to improve relationships with the country, Chau said.

Many people in the community still have relatives in Vietnam.

“They still don’t have the freedom of religion, speaking or writing,” Chau said.
