Thunder Shakes Up Pirates

Shann Ferch scored 28 points, hitting 8 of 11 field goals - including five 3-pointers - and 7 of 8 free throws to lead NBC Thunder to a 79-74 men’s exhibition win at Whitworth.

DeWaune Wesley added 25 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Thunder. The Thunder hit 22 of 29 free throws, Whitworth 9 of 14.

Gunner Olsen scored 15 for the Pirates, hitting 6 of 10 field goals.

Ticket packages for Gonzaga’s men’s and women’s games in the Arena in January will go on sale Monday at all G&B Select-A-Seat outlets and at the Arena box office.

The GU women will play Colgate and the men will meet New Mexico for a Jan. 2 doubleheader. The men will face Prairie View A&M on Jan. 6.

Ticket packages for all three games are $30 and $20. Groups of 10 or more will receive a $5 discount off the $20 package. The Arena games are included in GU’s season-ticket package.

Women’s soccer

Katie Rupert beat two defenders after a corner kick to punch in a 5-yard goal, lifting North Idaho (16-3-2) to a 3-2 overtime win over Columbia Basin (16-3-2) in an NWAACC tournament semifinal at Bothell, Wash.

The Cardinals will meet either Edmonds or Walla Walla in today’s title match.

Men’s soccer

Tacoma (14-3-5) won a shootout 4-3 to nip NIC 2-1 in a semifinal of the NWAACC tournament at Bothell, Wash.

NIC (13-5-2) made its first three shots in the shootout, but the fourth was wide and the fifth was saved by Titans goalkeeper Sean Paterbau.

Cross country

NIC’s men placed fifth and the women placed seventh at the NJCAA championships at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

The men, with their second-best finish in history, tied Barton County (Kan.) CC with 164 points. NIC won the tiebreaker because its No. 6 runner finished ahead of Barton’s No. 6.

The women bunched their five scorers between 31st and 43rd places.

Todd List led the NIC men, completing the 8,000-meter course in 27 minutes for 19th place.

Sophomore Janel Falk ran a personal-best 20:03 for 5,000 to place 31st for NIC’s women.
