‘Crush’ Classic Rock ‘N’ Roll

Stacey Driscoll Mead High School

In the infamous words of Joan Jett, I love rock ‘n’ roll. Sometimes blues, jazz and country influences can be washed out of the music, and the bare-bones rock that’s left is as great as any flourish the artist could have added.

Such is the case for Bon Jovi’s new record, “Crush.”

I was drawn to the album because of the first release off the disc titled “It’s My Life.” This song is a perfect example of all “Crush” has to offer. It’s a fun, hopped-up, rock anthem filled to the brim with wailing guitars, a strong beat and Jon Bon Jovi’s rough-cut vocals.

This tribute to good old rock ‘n’ roll is mirrored in tracks such as “Just Older” and “Captain Crash & The Beauty Queen From Mars.”

This band doesn’t limit itself either. Tracks like “Next 100 Years” and “She’s A Mystery” are rarely expected (but well-received) and sparkles of lyrical verse and silvery melody. These songs are the kind that make you sigh with bittersweet nostalgia when heard, with lyrics like “I’ll believe when you don’t believe in anything … I’ll be here for the next 100 years.”

All in all, the album retains the feel of the classic, great rock ‘n’ roll of the 1980s.

On the first listen, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. The depth and variation in music weren’t apparent right away.

Just trust me. It’s there. This is simply great music that isn’t simple at all.
