Man Convicted, Fined For Squeezing Bread
A man convicted of manhandling baked goods has avoided jail time - but the whole affair is going to cost him a good deal of dough.
Samuel Feldman must keep telling his psychiatrist why he loves to squeeze bread loaves and poke holes in cookie wrappers at supermarkets, Judge David Heckler ruled Monday.
Heckler also sentenced Feldman to six months of probation and ordered him to pay $1,000 restitution to stores where he’d damaged packages.
Feldman acknowledged having touched too many bundles but said he had not meant to hurt them.
He did not acknowledge having a psychiatric problem, said his attorney, Ellis Klein.
“The doctor seemed to think he was a hyper-selective shopper,” Klein said.
Feldman was convicted in September of two counts of criminal mischief after a 1998 video surveillance tape was presented as evidence.
