Snoops Facing New Opponents

Computers, e-mail and Web surfing have given snoops an unprecedented opportunity to eavesdrop on American consumers.

To help reclaim some of that lost privacy, several companies are touting products and services designed to level the playing field.

Some allow users to browse sites anonymously, while others give consumers the power to crush or filter out cookies - bits of identifying code filed in computer hard drives.

* Peer-to-peer: A father’s fascination with his kids’ interaction with friends on the Internet was the stimulus for a promising new means of computing called peer-to-peer.

Such connections allow desktop computers to communicate directly, rather than going through big Web sites or corporate servers.

Scores of start-ups are cranking out code to help corporations tame this latest networking frontier.
