Five years ago: President Clinton continued to press his case for sending 20,000 U.S. ground troops to Bosnia. President Clinton signed a $6 billion road bill that ended the federal 55 mph speed limit.

One year ago: Hsing-Hsing, the popular giant panda who arrived at the National Zoo in 1972 as a symbol of U.S.-China detente, was euthanized at age 28 because of his deteriorating health.
