National Forests

The Forest Service information office that’s been in Spokane’s downtown Post Office since 1996 has moved to the Valley.

Beginning Monday, people can get the Northwest Forest Pass, national forest maps and other Forest Service passes and information in the new location the office is sharing with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

The new address is: Forest Service Information, 1103 N. Fancher Rd. Spokane, WA, 99212. The new telephone number is 536-1251.

The federal government raised the rent at the Post Office, forcing out the small information unit, said office manager Linda Schulte. However, the U.S. Geological Survey map sales office will remain in the downtown Post Office at Lincoln and Riverside.

The Forest Service Information office sells the Northwest Forest Pass, which is required for parking at many trailheads throughout the region. The passes can be purchased on site or with a credit card by calling the toll-free number, (800) 270-7504.

The office also sells National Forest maps for Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Golden Age Passports are available for $10. The passports entitle people 62 and older to 50 percent off on camping, passes, boat launching and free access to national parks for the rest of their lives.

Golden Access cards also are available for free, offering similar discounts to the legally disabled and blind.

Wood cutting permits and Christmas tree tags for the Colville National Forest are available at the office. Schulte said she’s trying to work out an arrangement to provide those permits for the Panhandle National Forest as well.
