Onstot, Melges Win Top Scouting Honors
Martin Onstot, a member of Boy Scout Troop 313, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in ceremonies at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church in June. His service project included organizing a group of boys to build a bench and planting area adjacent to the church playground.
Onstot is the son of Ken and Nadine Onstot. He is a senior at Ferris High School, where he is a member of the Honor Society and a section leader in band.
Gayle Melges, a member of Girl Scout Troop 248, has earned the Girl Scout Silver Award. It is the highest award given at the Cadette level of Girl Scouting. Her project involved planning a day camp emphasizing outdoor skills for younger girls.
Melges is the daughter of David and Shirley Melges and an eighth-grade student in the Odyssey Program at Libby Center. She is active in band and participates in choir and her church youth group.
Robin Bell and Kathryn Codd, both students at Gonzaga Preparatory School, are 2001 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists. They are among 16,000 students who qualified as semifinalists from the more than 1.2 million students in some 20,000 U.S. high schools who took the 1999 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Bell is the daughter of David and Ann Bell.
Codd is the daughter of Bill and Diane Codd.
Also, Gonzaga Prep seniors Amanda House and Ted Wissink are Commended Students in the 2001 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended Students placed among the Top 5 percent of students who took the 1999 PSAT.
House is the daughter of Creigh and Jan House.
Wissink is the son of William and Ann Wissink.
