Playfair Set For Busy Weekend
A rare Saturday program of horse racing and a stakes race for promising 3-year-olds on Sunday are the weekend highlights at Playfair Race Course.
The $5,000 Graduation Stakes at six furlongs is the seventh-race feature Sunday night. High weight was assigned Thursday to the Vince Gibson-trained Follow That Road, who’ll carry 124 pounds and jockey Lane Rennaker.
Follow That Road, a front-running Adventure Road gelding, was on the pace for two calls against older horses in the Inaugural Handicap here on Sept. 16 before fading to fifth in a field of six.
Previously, Follow That Road, the only three-time winner in the field, went gate-to-wire for an $8,000 claiming tag last month at Emerald Downs against non-winners of two, including Dusty’s Wish, also an entrant in the Graduation.
The promotional theme both Saturday and Sunday nights is Native American Appreciation Weekend. It starts at 3:30 p.m. each day with an Indian relay race.
Also entered in Sunday’s stakes, a prep for the Nov. 5 Spokane Derby, are My Omar, trained by Mardell Moore, ridden by Juan Gutierrez and assigned 116 pounds; Dusty’s Wish, Roger Fraley, Danny Vergara, 121; Thunzarr, David Doutrich, Lorenzo Lopez, 122; Deposit Dancer, Bruce Wagar, Rowdy Luark, 119; Itsurturn, Bonnie Jenne, Robert Munoz, 122; Neighborhood Bully, Mike Christian, Sean Evans, 116, and Forever A Star, Jenne, Nathan Chaves, 118.
Forever A Star, the lone filly in the race, runs as part of an entry with Itsurturn.
Racing starts at 4:50 p.m. each day.
Saturday’s program is one of three Saturdays on the schedule.
