Adams County Othello
Police Chief Bill McDonell says his department has passed the rigorous accreditation process of the Chiefs and Sheriffs Association of Washington. The association’s goal is to see that police departments are run correctly. The local force has been working toward this recognition for five years.
Ferry County Republic
The Chamber of Commerce is challenging area restaurants to come up with their own distinct chili to vie for the title of Republic’s best. Four prize categories include best overall, hottest, most unique and people’s choice. The contest will be Oct. 21 at the Curlew Civic Hall. To register, call the Curlew Saloon at (509) 779-4551.
Grant County Royal City
At a recent meeting, residents asked the Royal Port District commissioners about the lack of development at the Royal Industrial Park. Commissioners said there are three possible deals in the works, which they were asked by interested parties to keep confidential. More should appear soon in the Royal Review.
Lincoln County Davenport
People looking for Bi-County sports scores and standings can now log on to www.dcynews.com. The Web site, from the DCY youth center at the county fairgrounds, is updated weekly by students and staff. Also on the site is local advertising, DCY meeting and event updates and news, and links to area churches.
Pend Oreille County Ione
The local TOPS group is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. Members of Ione Take Off Pounds Sensibly have been meeting every Tuesday since 1970, when Kirsten Redinger, Henrietta Dawson, Ruth Records and Esther Breeden got together after attending a meeting in Spokane to form their own club. The club is running strong with 23 members working to lose weight without fad diets.
Spokane County Spokane
The City Terminal’s Rally in the Alley, part of the Downtown Visual Arts Tour today, will be in the alley behind the Montvale Building on First and Monroe from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Activities will include children’s art games, a spaghetti feed, beer garden and live music. The terminal is a budding arts and entertainment district that occupies the block Southwest of First and Monroe. Call 838-8993.
Stevens County Colville
Despite a warehouse fire that burned most of the supplies a few weeks before the event, the recent Veterans’ Stand Down here was a success. Coordinator Warren Wegis says 2,617 veterans and their families attended the event to receive coats, boots, clothing and other usable items the military lists as surplus. Last year, 1,500 vets attended, showing the growing need for this kind of event. The military sent replacement supplies for those lost in the fire.
Whitman County Pullman
Blaming cuts from I-695, Pullman’s public transit officials say they’ve lost 33 percent of their annual operating income. As a result, the transit system is operating on reduced hours with old equipment in its 14-bus fleet.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
Addresses will replace route and box numbers in the county within six months, county building inspector Mike Maland said. The change will save emergency crews time and make it possible for delivery companies to service the area. Postcards with the new addresses will be sent to residents.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Lois Jensen has applied for a conditional use permit to operate a 80-acre septic sludge landfill and a lined storage lagoon. A public hearing will be at 7:30 tonight in courtroom 4 at the Bonner County Courthouse to discuss the request.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Lisa Gehrke of Bonners Ferry won a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire Coupe from the Boundary Trading Company in a giveaway Sept. 30. She and nine others were picked to draw envelopes holding either a key to the car or the name of the consolation prize. Gehrke said God had told her she would win. “He told me which envelope to pick.” Gehrke doesn’t need the car and plans to sell it and donate some of the money.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
A kids’ bicycle rodeo set for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the old Montgomery Ward parking lot will teach safety and hand signals. About 150 helmets will be given away, along with water bottles, coloring books and stickers. Students may also meet bicycle patrol officers of the Coeur d’Alene police and the Kootenai County sheriff’s departments.
Latah County Moscow
Students will be out of school today and may attend the $15 “Wilderness Safari” program from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the United Church of Moscow and West Park Elementary, 510 Home St. It’s offered by Campfire Boys and Girls. For information, call (208) 667-0611.
Shoshone County Kellogg
More students read with their parents this year than last year during the summer reading program in both Shoshone and Kootenai area libraries. Students received donated books. Local businesses also donated prizes for weekly drawings.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
Pay raises for the central office secretaries and district administrators were approved by the school board last week. The four secretaries and Superintendent Kirby Maki got a 5 percent raise. The board also approved a 1.6-mile school bus route extension on the Swede Mountain Road.
