Kindergartens Boost CV Numbers

Central Valley School District has almost 200 more students than expected this fall, for a total enrollment of 10,537.

Other districts in the Spokane Valley are showing smaller changes in enrollments, or virtually no change at all.

Central Valley’s jump is almost all in kindergarten students. While the district is used to seeing 200 to 250 kindergartners enroll over the summer, this year, 309 students were signed up this summer for kindergarten.

“That’s a whole different ballgame for us,” said Carol Peterson, elementary director for Central Valley.

Including children who were also enrolled last spring, Central Valley has 708 kindergartners.

This bulge of kindergartners is spread evenly around the district.

East Valley School District showed no growth this fall, with 4,585 students, compared to last fall’s enrollment of 4,589.

West Valley School District is showing a gain of about 60 students this year over last September, increasing to an enrollment of 3,496.

Much of that gain is due to extra enrollment at the West Valley City School. A change of location, to the former Spokane Valley High School building, made room for about 50 more students.

Freeman School District also remained steady, with 842 students, just three more than last fall.
