A measure to form a tax-supported rural library district won 77 percent approval at the Sept. 19 election. “I was so pleased the majority of our residents wanted to keep the library open,” said Becky Macy of Friends of the Library II. Macy says the next step to making it official is to get voter approval Nov. 7. In that election, only folks within the Othello city limits will cast ballots.

The community is invited to help Effie S. Davidson celebrate her 100th birthday on Oct. 11. The party will be held at Ferry County Memorial Hospital from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. She’s hoping to relive her childhood with a horse and wagon trip if the weather is satisfactory.

The Boys and Girls Club here is making an impact with kids of all ages. Ryan Graves, the club’s director, has announced the organization will add after-school programs at middle schools in Moses Lake, Othello, Quincy and Mattawa. Quincy and Mattawa may not have funds for an official clubhouse, but Graves says extending programs here has been his goal from the beginning.

Local history buff Pat Rice has been using the Internet to take Lincoln County history worldwide. Rice found questions posted on the net by Suella Postles of England. Postles was searching out her family history and found Lincoln County played a large part in it. Rice rummaged through her library of county history to tell Postles her ancestor Henry M. Thompson was an early county commissioner here, and his son, Raymond, was quite a writer and local historian himself.

The local business district has been cleaning up after a rash of vandalism. Several Main Street businesses had buildings spray painted recently. The list includes the Post Office, Lions Club train station, L.J.’s Tavern and Mountain Trailers. Police say they have suspects and will make arrests soon.

The free speakers bureau offered by the Spokane Parks Department has added new topics for group presentations. Among them are talks about the expansion of Riverfront Park to the north bank of the Spokane River and the restoration of two historic gardens at Pioneer Park. The local Ducks Unlimited chapter is having its annual banquet and auction tonight. Co-Chairs Jim McGowan and Jerry Cline invite all to come out for good food, friends and incredible bargains. “When it comes to conservation there are a lot of people out there with good intentions,” says McGowan, noting they may not know how to go about their task. Ducks Unlimited, McGowan says, has an impressive habitat record of constructing wetlands, which is where tonight’s proceeds will be directed. For information, call (509)684-6033.

The Benewah Community Hospital/St. Maries Family Medicine Center changed its walk-in urgent care clinic hours. The new hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays. The clinic will be closed on Sundays and holidays.

About 200 draft horses, including Belgians and Clydesdales, will pull and perform during the 24th annual Idaho State Draft Horse International competition. The event starts at 9 a.m. today and Sunday at the Bonner County Fairgrounds.

About 40 windows were broken at Bonners Ferry High School Oct. 1. Police Chief Dave Kramer said the vandals didn’t go into the school but estimated damages at more than $1,000, making the crime a felony.

Kootenai County Fire District No. 1 will have an open house today at its fire station at 1712 Golf Course Road. The event will include demonstrations of emergency techniques and equipment and will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in celebration of fire prevention week, which begins Sunday.

Carol Cady of Libby shot a bull moose a week ago while the animal was about 300 yards away and running. Cady and her husband, Bill, had been hunting in Miller Creek. She said it was the first moose she’s shot in 35 years.
