Ritzville

East Adams Rural Hospital employees are training to use a new CT scanner in a mobile trailer unit on the Ninth Avenue side of the hospital. Meanwhile, the public is invited to a hospital foundation wine tasting party and auction, Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Ferry County

Republic

Residents are bracing for deer hunting season. A popular destination for hunters, Republic and the northern reaches of Ferry County see a good deal of tourism money this time of year. General deer season begins Saturday, with Oct. 27 tagged as opening day for white-tails. Mule deer season is Saturday through Oct. 22.

Grant County

Grand Coulee

A group of Colville Confederated Tribe members recently protested the tribe’s employment of non-Indians. The tribe has maintained it cannot fill managerial positions with members who don’t qualify. Protesters say the tribe passed a resolution saying all nonmember employees were to have five years in which to train a registered tribal member to take their job. This, protesters claim, has not happened. A group of picketers recently rallied in front of the Colville business office decrying lack of opportunity and the newly announced 20 percent cuts in all tribal departments.

Lincoln County

Davenport

Douglas O. Coultas, 55, will not spend time in jail after entering an Alford plea on two counts of fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation, a misdemeanor. Lincoln County is not equipped to handle Coultas’ medical needs, as he’s being treated for cancer. Instead, Coultas will pay a fine of $2,000 - $1,000 for each victim to receive counseling.

Spokane County

Deer Park

The basketry of Washington artist Lani Powell and paintings by Idaho artist Patsey Parsons are on display at Crawford Gallery in Deer Park through Nov. 3. A public reception for the artists is scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Deer Park Arts Commission, 316 E. Crawford, lower level. For more information call 276-8884.

Onion Creek

Quinn’s Meadow Road is too narrow for a school bus to use safely. That’s why the Onion Creek School is now looking for a four-wheel-drive vehicle to drive on the route. Last year, the school bus was in a minor wreck, so Principal Renee Hall has been picking up the kids at the top of the hill.

Under the tutelage of Pullman barber and third-degree black belt John Adams, two Washington State University students have been invited to compete in the International Karate Championship in Japan in November. Aaron Bell, a graduate student in business administration, and Anna Alpert, a senior in microbiology, are among eight U.S. citizens invited to the event.

St. Maries

The Benewah Soil and Water Conservation District has three supervisor positions open. Richard Lawson and Terry Doupe have filed for re-election, Christina Crawford did not. Anyone interested in filling the positions may still file as a write-in candidate by Friday.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

The Alzheimer’s Support Group is raising funds for a Care Trak Monitoring System. The system consists of several transmitter bracelets and a mobile locator receiver. After the system is purchased, the group will donate the locator to the local search and rescue team and the bracelets will be loaned to community members. Bonners Ferry

Award-winning 4-H members will receive trophies for grand champion and medallions for reserve champion during Celebration Night. The event is set for 6:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds. Special awards for leadership, spirit and sportsmanship will also be given. Members and those interested in joining the club may register.

Coeur d’Alene

Lynn Gerhadt will tell stories for children during Starbucks Family Literacy Night. The program will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Coeur d’Alene Starbucks, 212 Ironwood Drive, by Starbucks and Even Start Family Literacy Program. Children may bring their favorite book and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate.

The Latah County Adult Literacy Council was given a $943 donation by Hastings Entertainment. Hastings began gathering donations from customers when it opened nine months ago in the Palouse Mall.

Shoshone County

Kellogg

The Staff House museum has 28 bronze plates left to sell for its restoration fund-raiser. A total of 899 plates will be engraved and cemented into bricks commemorating a person, family or group. The money raised is being used to restore an 1899 Nordberg air compressor, landscape an area behind the museum, and install fencing and lighting.

Libby

The teachers union and the school board agreed to raise teachers’ base salary $867, making it $19,925. Even with the increase the base is below the state average and about $5,000 below the national average. Along with the base wage, teachers also receive major medical insurance for their family, but no dental or vision insurance.
