Pine Street Baptist Pastor Bob Plunkett doesn’t see the charred lumber and blackened nails when he looks at the recently torched chapel. “I see the faces of the people who put countless hours into building it,” he says, noting members had worked on the structure for 18 years. The chapel, a work in progress, was set on fire last week by an arsonist.

Peggy Jarman is looking for history on the Orient School. Jarman is working on a history book to celebrate the town’s centennial and the school building’s 90th birthday. Hundreds of Colville Confederated Tribes members flocked to Moses Lake for their annual powwow. Len Friedlander of the Moses Lake Entiat Tribe says Moses Lake is a spiritually significant place for area tribes.

Lincoln County

Odessa

Three local firefighters are glad to be home and on call for the volunteer fire department. Landon Lobe, Brian Finkbeiner and Roger Sebesta were among 500 volunteers who traveled to Montana during the recent forest fires. The men were assigned to structure patrol - keeping an eye on buildings to see how close they were to the flames.

Pend Oreille County

The local newspaper is asking high school football teams to think safety first. Newport Miner Publisher Fred Willenbrock says an ambulance and crew should be at every football game. Apparently, the ambulance crew at a recent game in Rathdrum was called away on an emergency, then one arose on the field as well.

Spokane County

Spokane

The National Association for College Admission Counseling will hold a free college fair Oct. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Spokane Convention Center. The fair will give students and parents the opportunity to gather informaiton and ask questions of admissions representatives from a wide range of public and private colleges and universities. The construction of a gas station at the local Safeway store has uprooted the county’s mobile recycling station. The station had been in the northwest corner of the parking lot for more than four years. The county is looking for an alternative site. Anyone with ideas may call (509) 738-6106.

Pullman police are looking for someone who destroyed three trees downtown early Oct. 6. The purple mountain ash trees were all broken off about 3 feet from the ground. The trees were part of a downtown beautification project.

IDAHO

Plummer

The City Council recently approved an increase in rates for garbage pickup to be effective on the November bill. Residential customers will be charged $15 for two cans. If they call the city. additional cans will be $4. The minimum rate is $10 for one can. To request changes to the system, call (208) 686-1641. Other changes in the system are garbage usually picked up Tuesdays will now be picked up on Mondays, and Southlake Services is the new contractor for garbage collection.

Cynthia Dalsing recently opened Women’s Health Care and offers exams, birth control and several basic health screenings. The center also offers menopause management and mammograms. Dalsing has 20 years of experience.

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade don’t have to attend school tomorrow or Friday, high school students do. Teachers will be having in-service days.

Kootenai County

Coeur d’Alene

A congressional forum with candidates for Rep. Helen Chenoweth-Hage’s seat is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 25 at the North Idaho College Lake Coeur d’Alene Room. The forum will feature Lt. Gov. Butch Otter, Linda Pall, Ron Wittig and Kenneth Hambsch.

Latah County

Tonia White, a senior at the University of Idaho, began her service as an AmeriCorps member at the Renaissance Public Charter School. She’ll tutor students, coordinate tutors and help teachers develop supplemental learning activities.

Shoshone County

Prichard

The Prichard/Murray Volunteer Fire Department responds to fires but also helps with auto accidents and provides emergency medical services. The volunteers need pagers to improve communication and improve response time. They’re holding a rummage sale Saturday and Sunday at the fire hall to raise money for the pagers and are looking for donations to be sold. Donations can be left at the hall Saturday and Sunday.

Libby

Gov. Marc Racicot and various churches are asking the people of Montana to dedicate one day in October as a day of thanks. The special day would be to thank the people who fought fire, provided emergency relief and helped in other ways.
